Brennon Henderson
Brennon is our student highlight for the month of February. Brennon is currently a second-year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He is originally from the small town of Dayton, Idaho whose claim to fame is that Napoleon Dynamite was filmed just 10 min away in the neighboring town. He grew up working on potato farms, playing sports, and spending ample time in the mountains which cultivated a love for the outdoors. He continues this love today with hobbies such as camping, hiking, and just about every sport there is. He and his wife, Annika, love visiting new places, especially national parks. He enjoys medical school where he gets to deepen his understanding of the human body, its physiology, and how he can use that knowledge to someday impact others’ lives as a future physician.
Brennon did an exceptional job presenting this research project titled “Autologous Fat Grafting in Hand Surgery: A Systematic Review” virtually at the monthly ResearchXP Consortium. The project is a systematic review highlighting the increasing use of autologous fat grafting in hand surgery for both cosmetic and functional use. Of the 224 studies identified or this project, 14 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed based on their study design, pathology treated, type of AFG used, and primary outcomes. Some key takeaways from this project were that AFG successfully treated pain/symptoms as well as cosmetic appearance with no reported adverse events. There were also several studies that demonstrated effectiveness in treating osteoarthritis of the first CMC joint by using AFG as opposed to arthroplasty. This is an exciting application of AFG and it will be interesting to see how AFG continues to be used in orthopedics.
