Charlie Marchese
Charlie is our student highlight for the month of March. Charlie is currently a third-year medical student at Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is originally from Denver, Colorado, and graduated with both his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado, where he also played Division II Club Hockey. He spent last year as a Clinical Anatomy Fellow where he helped teach cadaveric anatomy to the first-year students. During this fellowship year, Charlie also conducted many cadaveric based research projects which have been published in journals such as Anatomia, The Journal of Knee Surgery, Hand, and the Journal of Hand Surgery.
Charlie did a great job presenting his poster on the anterolateral ligament of the knee and its possible clinical correlations. He presented this at the ResearchXP Consortium as well as several other national conferences. His current research projects involve both bone forearm fracture remodeling to developing a mathematical equation that can be used to estimate the non-surgical healing of these injuries. This algorithm will then be used within a newly developed iPad application, that when combined with characteristics of the patient’s fracture (translation, angulation, displacement), can then be shown to concerned parents, and can help them visualize how their child’s fracture will heal without surgical treatment. Charlie is married to his wife Emily, and hopes to pursue orthopedic surgery training after graduating from KCU.
