Hanslee Peay

Hanslee is our student highlight for the month of May. He will be starting as a first-year medical student at Tulane University School of Medicine and is originally from Mapleton, Utah. Hanslee graduated from Southern Utah University, where he played football for three years of his undergraduate studies. During his gap year, he recently completed his MBA and enjoyed time with his wife, who he shares a passion for adventure and community. Hanslee has a strong interest in pursuing a career in orthopedic surgery and is already actively engaged in research projects that reflect his commitment to the field.

Hanslee recently presented his project titled Physician and Patient Communication at the ResearchXP Consortium. His qualitative study explored both physician and patient perspectives on various aspects of medical communication, including preferred communication styles, handling difficult situations, delivering bad news, and building relationships. By interviewing 10 physicians and 10 patients, Hanslee identified key areas of alignment—such as the shared value placed on honesty and relationship-building—as well as notable gaps, including patient desire for more comprehensive nutrition discussions and openness to digital communication channels like text messaging. His findings highlight opportunities to tailor physician-patient interactions for better healthcare outcomes and underscore the importance of patient-centered communication training.
